What to do in Riec-sur-Bélon

Must-see destinations

Bélon flat oysters, a world-renowned gastronomic treasure

Riec-sur-Bélon reigns as the capital of the flat oyster. This exceptional variety is named after the river that gives it its unique taste. The fresh water of the Bélon mixes with the salt water of the sea. This natural mixing gives the oysters their characteristic nutty flavor. The Conseil national des arts culinaires officially recognizes this particular taste. The oyster beds stretch for 4 km along the shore. Five establishments have been perpetuating this ancestral know-how since 1864. Some offer guided tours and tastings overlooking the ria. A must for your camping vacation in South Finistère.

The port of Bélon, epicenter of Breton oyster farming

The port of Bélon offers an exceptional setting for seafood lovers. Oyster farms border the river directly. You can buy oysters direct from the producers. Les Huîtrières du Château de Bélon have been carrying on the tradition for five generations. The place is bathed in a special light that has seduced painters. Gastronome Curnonsky took refuge here between 1940 and 1944. Hiking trails lead from the port to the pointe de Penquernéo. A bistro offers panoramic views over the ria. Discover it from your campsite in Riec-sur-Bélon.

The port of Rosbras, an authentic haven on the Aven river

The port of Rosbras nestles opposite the port of Kerdruc on the river Aven. Its colorful quays and fishermen’s cottages create a picturesque backdrop. A road lined with Breton thatched cottages takes you there. The port’s history dates back to the 16th century. Boats were sheltered here from storms and corsairs. In the 19th century, sardine fishing and oyster farming flourished. Today, 200 moorings welcome yachtsmen. There’s also a bistro where you can enjoy the maritime atmosphere. The port is an ideal starting point for a trip up to Pont-Aven.

Penquernéo Point, a breathtaking panorama

The pointe de Penquernéo marks the junction of the Aven and Bélon estuaries. A former military fort stands guard over this strategic location. The ruins offer spectacular views over Port Manec’h and Kerfany-les-Pins. The coastal path from the port of Bélon is 9 kilometers long. It crosses the oyster beds before reaching the headland. The easy route is suitable for the whole family. Average walking time is 2 hours. This unspoilt natural site boasts remarkable biodiversity. The 189 species of plants and seabirds that inhabit the area are a delight to behold.

The Kerantiec covered walkway, a rare Neolithic vestige

The Kerantiec covered walkway dates back to the Neolithic period. This megalithic monument boasts exceptional arched and buttressed architecture. The pillars form a double-sloped roof, unique in Brittany. Only five examples of this type exist in Finistère. The chamber measures 9.5 meters in length. The site served as a collective burial ground for Neolithic farmers. The monument was rediscovered in June 1947 by Pierre-Roland Giot. It has been a listed monument since 1953. The alley stands in a field at Kerantiec. It bears witness to ancient human occupation of the region.

The GR34 coastal path, an exceptional iodine hike

The GR34, known as the Sentier des Douaniers, runs for 1,800 kilometers along the Brittany coast. It crosses the Pays de Quimperlé for over 80 kilometers. The Riec-sur-Bélon section offers remarkable panoramic views. The path winds between rocky points and wild creeks. It reveals the confidential ports of Rosbras and Bélon. The cliffs overlook unspoilt coves. The trail follows the banks of the Aven and Bélon rivers. You’ll discover working oyster beds. White and red markings guarantee safe walking. Circuits ranging from 8 to 24 kilometers are available for all levels.
