What to expect in Lorient
Whether you’re a fisherman, yachtsman or simply a lover of the sea, Lorient offers the ideal setting. There are many places to discover in this beautiful Morbihan town, including the Base sous-marine and the Cité de la Voile. Lorient is also famous for its Interceltic Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Finally, Lorient is the starting point for a visit to the island of Groix.
The Submarine Base and the Cité de la Voile
The Keroman submarine base reflects Lorient’s military past. Now home to a number of companies, it’s also the perfect place for history and sailing enthusiasts. In fact, many racing yachts originate from Lorient, so you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one at the Base.
On one side, the Flore S645 submarine and its museum in the Davis Tower. This visit doesn’t stop at a room with historical artifacts, and you can learn in detail about the past of this military base, with some relics still visible. Next, learn about the use of a submarine. Finally, take a step back in time and step through the doors of the real Flore S645 submarine.
After this first adventure, on the other side: discover the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly. Eric Tabarly, a famous sailor who died at sea, is now an emblem of Lorient. Here, young and old alike can discover the world of sailing. On the pier side, you can admire the famous sailboats of the navigator: the Pen Duick (“little black head” in Breton). In summer, the Cité de la Voile offers a variety of packages, including introductory sailing courses. Don’t hesitate to stop off at the “La Base” restaurant/bar, with its superb view of the harbour and the submarine base.
Discover the Festival Interceltique
In downtown Lorient, enjoy a stroll along the marina, the very heart of the city. You can also take a stroll along the shopping streets.
It’s in this city center that the famous Lorient Interceltic Festival has been held in August since 1971. A veritable meeting place for the Celtic nations, this festival has made a name for itself, and its reputation is now well established. Parades in traditional costumes, concerts, bagadoù championships, fest noz, traditional dances… Immerse yourself in the world of the Celts.
