Brittany, land of festivals
Brittany organizes numerous events and is renowned for its festivals.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people from France and abroad travel across the country to attend the festival of their choice.
Thanks to the diversity of dates, locations, programming and festival spirit, the Brittany region attracts all types of festival-goers.
Whether they are associations or real businesses, the various Breton festivals are above all cultural projects to promote a skill or an art.
The timeless Vieilles Charrues festival
Without doubt the most popular festival in Brittany, with over 346,000 festival-goers for the 2023 edition, welcome to the Festival des Vieilles Charrues.
Located in the town of Carhaix-Plouguer in central Finistère, this festival attracts some of the world’s biggest music stars from all generations.
Often nicknamed “Les Charrues”, this festival is designed for today’s generations, with headliners that are always very popular.
The success of Les Vieilles Charrues (“Gouel an Erer Kozh” in Breton) is also due to its associative dimension since 1992. The festival is organized around different stages, each named after an artist from Brittany or of Breton origin.
Of course, everything has been thought out with comfort in mind, and the festival includes a camping area where festival-goers can pitch their tents.
It’s truly 3 days centered on universal values such as music, conviviality and sharing.
Lorient Océans, a maritime festival par excellence!
Created in 2022, this festival has now taken its place in the Breton festival landscape, and well deservedly so, with over 15,000 people expected to attend in 2023.
It’s a real maritime festival that takes place in the city of Lorient for 4 days of festivities with a variety of activities: concerts, boat tours, a parade of sea chanteys, etc…
The town of 6 harbors is now the place to be for enthusiasts, amateurs and the curious to discover the maritime adventure of this Breton town.
Racing yachts, military vessels, fishing boats, ocean-going vessels and old timers all come together to present themselves to the public and bring Lorient harbor to life.
The Celtic community at the rendezvous
Brittany first developed its Celtic origins by hosting major Celtic festivals, the best-known of which are the Lorient Interceltic Festival, the Filets Bleus Festival in Concarneau and the Cornouaille Festival in Quimper.
At the same time, various competitions take place, including the accordion competition, the bagad competition and the Golf CelTrophy.
Traditionally, on the first Sunday of the festival, the “Grande Parade des Nations Celtes” parade takes place in the streets of Lorient. Spectators and television viewers discover the costumes, music, songs and dances of countries and regions with Celtic roots: Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Galicia, Asturias and, of course, Brittany! This culture goes beyond the big festivals, and it’s not uncommon to find it in many towns and villages of Southern Brittany at “Fête de nuit”, or rather “Fest Noz” in Breton.
From metal and rock to pop and variety and jazz
That’s one of Brittany’s greatest assets! Visit our neighbors in the Pays de la Loire to discover one of the biggest metal festivals, the “Hellfest “, which takes place in Clisson, near Nantes, in June. For the metal family, it’s a real event to discover their idols such as Rammstein, Metallica and Guns N’Roses.
A few weeks later, one of France’s biggest festivals kicks off in the town of Carhaix-Plouguer, the famous Vieilles Charrues festival. This is the stage on which many great French and international pop-rock artists have performed, including Johnny Hallyday, Indochine, Muse and Scorpions. A real event, it’s on a site the size of 15 soccer pitches that festival-goers gather for a few days of festivities.
Another not-to-be-missed family event takes place in the southern Morbihan town of Damgan, where the annual Bretagne Sud festival is held. The festival is a real joie de vivre, with musicians, dancers and parades for all ages.
In a few words, whether you’re a fan of dance, music or just want to spend a convivial moment, you’re bound to find a festival to suit you in Southern Brittany. Similarly, when you spend your vacation at Flower Camping Le Kergariou, you’ll enjoy the Jazz’y Krampouezh festival in Névez in early July. And let’s not forget the Fest Noz, which will welcome you with open arms in the communes of South Finistère.
