Cap Sizun, an exceptional site
Here, Finistère truly lives up to its name: “the end of the land.” Pass through Quimper and continue on the road toward Cap Sizun from the Le Kergariou campground. There’s no doubt that these landscapes will charm you with their grandeur.
At Cap Sizun, a series of headlands and promontories stretch out into the open sea. The highlights of this coastline are the legendary Pointes du Raz and du Van. Beyond the vast expanses of the sea, the inland area has a welcoming atmosphere.
Designated a “Grand Site de France,” the Pointe du Raz is best known for its height (70 m) and its panoramic views. Opposite it stands the square lighthouse onthe islet of La Vieille, and in the distance, on a clear day, you can seethe island of Sein and the famous Ar Men lighthouse. Near the Pointe du Raz, shops and restaurants welcome you. The visitor center, equipped with a 100-seat screening room and an exhibition hall, informs and educates visitors about the richness of the natural environment and the charms of Cap-Sizun, a region with many attractions.
We recommend taking a walk along the GR34 trail to reach Pointe du Van. You’ll then pass through Baie des Trépassés. This large beach between the two headlands is particularly popular with water sports enthusiasts. According to Celtic tradition, this bay was where the druids set sail for the island of Sein.
Pointe du Van is every bit as impressive as its “big sister,” Pointe du Raz, as it is also very high (65 m). Dominated by the Saint-They Chapel, it impresses with its rugged beauty, large rocks, and varied vegetation.
In fact, Cap Sizun is also home to many birds, including the famous black-headed gull. Protected since 1996, the Pointe du Raz preserves the ecosystem of these species. Even more remarkable is the Cap Sizun bird sanctuary—don’t miss it. Along a spectacular coastline dotted with islets, you can observe the birds from the nature trail. To get an eagle’s-eye view, telescopes are available, and binoculars can be borrowed at the entrance.
