The ideal spot for surf enthusiasts
Guidel, a commune in the Morbihan department of Brittany, is one of the top destinations for surfing and water sports enthusiasts. Since 2015, the town has been awarded the “Ville de Surf” 2-star label, ensuring a welcome and an environment that encourages surfing in all its forms.
Surf spots
Guidel is home to some of the best surf spots in Brittany. In fact, one of Guidel’s greatest assets is the diversity of its spots!
Pen Er Malo
Novices will appreciate being introduced to surfing on the Pen Er Malo spot. This beach is known for its gentle waves, perfect for beginners.
La Falaise Beach
For training, surfers will find themselves on Plage de la Falaise. Located at the mouth of the Laïta River, you’ll need to adapt to the tide, preferring to practice the sport from low tide to mid-tide.
Loc’h Beach
For the more experienced, Plage du Loc’h is the surfing spot, with deeper waves for the more experienced surfers. In a friendly atmosphere, they share their favorite pastime.
Lannénec Beach
Kitesurfers and windsurfers will find themselves at Plage de Lannénec, where the smaller waves are perfectly suited. This is the southern part of Fort-Bloqué, where licensees practice all kinds of water sports.
Surf schools
Where there’s a surf town, there’s a surf school! Guidel has 3 main surf clubs.
ESB Fort Blocked
The Ecole de Surf de Bretagne (ESB) Fort Bloqué offers beginners and advanced surfing lessons. You’ll also find an equipment rental service (including surfboards) for independent use, on your way to the Pen Er Malo site.
West Surf Association
The West Surf Association is one of 9 schools rated 3 stars by the French Surfing Federation (FFS). Thanks to its infrastructure, qualified instructors and wide range of activities, the WSA has made a name for itself in the development of board sports (surfing, bodyboarding, paddle and skateboarding) and offers supervised group lessons.
YouSurf
As for the YouSurf school, it stands out for its mobility. YouSurf schools travel by minibus and offer equipment loans to facilitate surf lessons and courses. There’s also a surf shop in Guidel’s Le Belvédère shopping mall, stocked with top brands such as Bic and Lastage.
Safe surfing in Guidel
If you’d like to take advantage of your vacation to learn how to surf, don’t hesitate to book a stay near Guidel, on the coast. Our campsite is close to Guidel, just a 15-minute drive from the seaside resort.
A first-aid post is available on every beach in summer for safe surfing. The lifeguard posts are open from 1pm to 7pm and ensure the safety of bathers and board sports enthusiasts. Lifeguards are equipped with jet-skis and quads to ensure the safety of supervised bathing areas.
Surfing in nearby Pouldu
Guidel’s little sister, the beaches of Le Pouldu in South Finistère, are equally pleasant, especially the Plage du Kérou, where tourists and locals alike enjoy the sport. If you’d like to discover board sports and enjoy the wild charm of Finistère, Flower Camping Le Kergariou is the place for you.
Actions to promote water sports
Every year, Guidel-Plages hosts the Handiglisse weekend, organized by the Vagdespoir association, whose Breton branch is based in Guidel. The association’s aim is to make board sports accessible to people with disabilities, by providing adapted equipment, techniques and support.
For the comfort of surfers, the town of Guidel has set up a webcam on the Loc’h beach, accessible online(click here). So everyone can anticipate the weather conditions to practice their sport in the best possible conditions.
Guidel has also made a name for itself in the world surfing championships. It’s not unusual to see a Guidel school taking part in national events. A number of Guidel surfers are now touring the world to represent board sports, and of course, Brittany.
