Chosen to be the site of the Compagnie des Indes, Port-Louis enjoyed a period of prosperity thanks to the goods shipped from the Pondicherry trading post, such as pepper, cotton fabrics, spices, silks and red wood. After this period, the Company moved to Lorient. Port-Louis then turned to fishing and seaside tourism, which attracted many tourists.
The centerpiece of the city is its magnificent citadel. Built by the Spanish in 1590, it was completed in 1637. After its history with the Compagnie des Indes, today the citadel is home to two fascinating museums: the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes, where you can discover some of the great events in Lorient’s history, and the Musée de la Marine. From the top of the citadel, you’ll have a breathtaking view of Lorient harbour, theisland of Groix and the Pointe de Gâvres. From its origins, the citadel retains cannons and two bastions located behind a small bridge. A gate through the ramparts leads to the pleasant Grande-Plage.
