The island of Groix is home to 60 varieties of minerals, including the very distinctive blue glaucophane.
Megaliths bear witness to a very ancient settlement. But it was the sailors of the French East India Company and the tuna fishermen who cemented the island’s prosperity and character. In the early 20th century, Groix was France’s leading tuna port. Charming ports and stunning sights await you… Méné and Kerlard are home to typical low-lying houses with plastered walls. Miniature seawalls encircle Port-Lay. Much more tranquil, the small port of Locmaria winds through narrow streets lined with charming houses and fountains.
Looking for a relaxing break? The beaches and coves are calling you. Grands-Sables Beach is the only convex beach in Europe; its fine sand stretches out into the crystal-clear waters—don’t miss it! Before reaching Pointe des Chats, the Sables-Rouges beach is tinged with garnet. The coastline is rugged, but Poulziorec is a haven of peace, nestled at the bottom of a steep path.
