A getaway between wild beaches and Breton culture
In Southern Brittany, we’re lucky enough to have some very beautiful beaches. For your summer vacations, set course for Moëlan-sur-Mer, a commune in South Finistère.
This destination is where culture, charm, hiking, water sports and idleness meet for a vacation in Brittany. This seaside resort at the mouth of the River Bélon has made its beaches and coves the attraction for holidaymakers and locals alike, who want to discover the land of the rias.
Moëlan’s must-see beaches
Moëlan-sur-Mer’s small, unspoilt beaches between Riec-sur-Bélon and Clohars-Carnoët offer a calm, relaxing setting where parents love to bring their children. These include, in particular, Plage de Kerfany and Plage de Trénez.
Kerfany beach
Kerfany beach is Moëlan-sur-Mer’s best-known beach. It’s undoubtedly the fine sand beach of choice. This beach, which has been awarded the “Pavillon Bleu” (Blue Flag) label, has made a name for itself in the Quimperlé region, thanks in particular to its facilities. A supervised beach in July and August, it is one of the few beaches to install a “Tiralo” for people with reduced mobility. Its fine sand and protected play area just a few meters from the beach make it ideal for family vacations.
Trénez beach
The smaller, wilder Plage de Trénez, located between Plage de Kerfany and the port of Doëlan, will charm you with its breathtaking view of Ile Percée. The beach is peaceful all year round, but in the summer months, it’s full of white towels and sand. During your vacation, rejuvenation is the watchword when you come to Trénez beach. At low tide, the Atlantic Ocean will reveal a passageway leading to the small island 50 meters away.
Coves to discover
If you discover South Finistère, the first thing you’ll notice is its wild coastline. This part of Brittany, between land and sea, is best explored on footpaths such as the GR34 (sentier des Douaniers). It’s by chance that you’ll discover many places as unusual as they are inescapable, such as the little coves of Porz Teg or Poulguen, located near the Port of Doëlan for one, and the Port of Brigneau for the other.
Your walk along the coast will take you through an unforgettable landscape, with turquoise waters on one side and trees on the other. Before you know it, you’ll arrive at Trénez beach, and a few yards further on, you’ll find Porsguen and Prat Hervet coves. A haven of peace and tranquility, it’s the perfect place for the whole family to relax or swim.
Seaside activities
Like the Basque coast, the Breton coast is also a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. As with the beaches of Le Pouldu, there’s a wide range of water sports to choose from: paddleboarding, surfing, kayaking, sand yachting and much more… So, on your next seaside vacation, you’re sure to find something to suit you among the many water sports on offer.
The seashore, especially the beach at Trénez, is a playground for fishermen. With its direct access, it’s with their feet in the water that they gather shellfish. For the more experienced, the Port du Bélon is the perfect place to enjoy the pleasures of harvesting your own oysters on foot.
