Discover Concarneau, town of art and history
Concarneau, between heritage, art and maritime town, is one of the most beautiful towns in Finistère. Just 40 minutes from Le Kergariou campsitediscover this multi-faceted town.
Concarneau was built around its port, which grew with the fishing industry. A few years later, the town was surrounded by fortifications in the 14th century, resulting in today’s famous “ville-close”. But these impressive walls didn’t stop the town’s development, which now extends beyond the fortifications, thanks in particular to the fish canning industry.
Today, the Ville-Close is one of Brittany’s most visited sites. Over 350m long and 100m wide, two bridges invite you to discover the interior of this exceptional site. Rue Vauban, the main thoroughfare, will charm you with its charming houses and souvenir stores. A few meters further on, don’t miss the beautiful fountain in Place Saint-Guénolé. Finish your stroll on the ramparts of the “ville-close”, where you’ll discover the still-active fishing and yachting harbour.
Nearly 200 fishing boats give rhythm to the life of this port. For the lucky ones, late in the evening or early in the morning, enjoy the arrival of the fishermen. Concarneau is Europe’s No. 1 tuna port and France’s No. 3 fresh fish port.
For sunny days, try your hand at a water sports activity or a lazy day on the sandy beaches. You’ll have no trouble finding activities to occupy your day.
For history and heritage buffs, enjoy the covered market dating back to 1855, the contemporarychurch, the Fishing Museum, the Marinarium and the magnificent Château de Kériolet. The GR34 (customs trail – white and red markings) also offers incredible panoramic views.
Just after the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in August, enjoy the famous Festival des Filets Bleus in Concarneau. With Breton culture, concerts, traditional dances, festive costumes and the election of the Reine des Filets Bleus, it’s a 4-day change of scenery.
