Groix Island, the island of garnets

Check out the saying "he who sees groix, sees his joy".

On foot or by bike, theGroix Islandfrom Lorient near the camping Le Kergariou will charm you with its many facets. It is quite natural that the island of Groix imposes its identity, its mysteries and its originality.

As soon as you arrive in Port-Tudy, you will feel the uniqueness of this land rich in history. It is 8km long and 3km wide which awaits you in a village with low houses or in a cove with clear waters, you will then be able to verify the proverb: " Who sees Groix sees its joy ".

The island of Groix is a unique witness to the geological wealth of Brittany and is part of the European network: " Natura 2000". The rocky coastline is punctuated by beautiful beaches and wild creeks whose ever-fine sand is adorned with shades ranging from brilliant white to dark red garnet. The island of Groix has 60 varieties of minerals including the very special blue glaucophane.

Megaliths testify to a very ancient occupation. But it was the sailors of the Compagnie des Indes and the tuna fishermen who established its prosperity and personality. At the beginning of the 20th century, Groix was the leading tuna fishing port in France. Tuna is so deeply rooted in the culture that an iron fish is used as a weathervane on the church tower. Theeco-museum, in a former canning factory, is an invitation to discover even more!

Lovely harbours and sumptuous sites await you... Le Méné and Kerlard are home to typical, low houses with plastered walls. Miniature dykes surround Port-Lay. The tip of Pen-Men, with its square lighthouse, is located on the wildest coast. By the paths, reach the " Trou de l'Enfer", where the sea enters in a crack piercing the cliff. Much gentler, the little port of Locmaria is lost in the narrow streets with their pretty houses and fountains.

Looking for a relaxing break? Beaches and creeks are calling you. The Grands-Sables beach is the only convex beach in Europe, its fine sand juts out into the transparent waters, not to be missed! Before the Pointe des Chats, the Sables-Rouges beach is tinged with garnet. The coast is wild but Poulziorec is a haven of peace, at the bottom of a steep path.
